L’angelo nero

Genio della Scienza o Signore degli Inferi? [English version below]

Un angelo in bronzo controlla Piazza Statuto e il suo sguardo corre dritto lungo via Garibaldi, fino a fermarsi sulla facciata di Palazzo Madama in Piazza Castello. Posto sulla sommità di una montagna di massa solo apparentemente instabili, esso è parte del monumento che immortala un’opera dell’ingegneria civile: il lungo, buio e afoso Traforo del Frejus. A comporre l’opera, creata da un bozzetto di Luigi Belli, sono anche dei poderosi titani adagiati sulle rocce, provenienti proprio da quella montagna che divide l’Italia dalla Francia. Esausti e sconfitti, questi precipitano dall’alto per la vittoria dell’angelo alato, rappresentante il Genio della Scienza.

Per il suo colore scuro e per una serie di eventi avvenuti nel tempo proprio in questa piazza, la leggenda vuole che l’angelo nero sia in realtà Lucifero, posto a presenziare la porta dell’Inferno, collocata nel giardino dove giovani, anziani e un’umanità variegata tende a stazionare inconsapevole.

La straordinaria credenza si basa su fatti storici che conferiscono al luogo un alone di negatività: qui si trovava la necropoli romana dove venivano eseguite le condanne capitali; durante l’occupazione francese vi si trovava la ghigliottina; secondo studiosi dell’esoterismo sarebbe uno dei vertici del triangolo della magia nera (insieme a Londra e San Francisco).

Eppure, a guardarla oggi, non si direbbe: coi suoi portici alti ad adornare le ampie facciate ottocentesche, contro cui si riflette il sole e ne scalda i colori giallo e rosso dell’intonaco, Piazza Statuto non pare riservare alcuna sinistra sorpresa, ma tanto vale fare attenzione a dove si mettono i piedi per non sprofondare nel regno di Satana.

The black angel
Genius of Science or Lord of the Hell?

A bronze angel controls Piazza Statuto and his gaze runs straight along Via Garibaldi, until it rests on the facade of Palazzo Madama, in Piazza Castello. Perched on top of a mountain masses apparently unstable, it is part of the monument that immortalizes a civil engineering work: the long, dark and sultry Frejus Tunnel. The monument, created from a sketch by Luigi Belli, has also powerful titans lying on the rocks (coming off that mountain that separates Italy from France). Exhausted and defeated, they fall from the top because of the victory of the angel with wings, representing the Genius of Science.

For its dark color and some events that occurred along the time in this square, the legend says that the dark angel is Lucifer placed to attend the gates of Hell, located in the garden where young guys, elderly and  humanity tends to be stationed unconscious.

The extraordinary belief is based on historical facts that give the place an aura of negativity: here was the Roman necropolis where the death sentences were carried out; during the French occupation there was the guillotine; according with experts of esotericism would be one of the vertices of the triangle of black magic (with London and San Francisco).

Yet, looking at it today, you wouldn’t say, with its high arches adorning the large XIX century facades, against which reflects the sun and it warms the colors yellow and red, Piazza Statuto does not seem to reserve any surprises, but so is to be careful where you put your feet not to sink into the kingdom of Satan.
